Medical facilities use carbon dioxide, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and oxygen. These gases are used for lifesaving procedures such as resuscitation, anesthetic, and in powering surgical tools. Proper handling of these gas cylinders is critical. If mishandled these gases could cause serious injury.

Dropping or mishandling a medical gas cylinder can cause damage. Any damage at all to the cylinder can cause ruptures or leaks.  Leaks of these gases can cause serious illness or can even cause fires or explosions. It is vital for the integrity of the gas that it stay free of contaminants and pure. If gases get tampered with and become contaminated then that can be very harmful to patients.

Storage of medical gas cylinders are regulated by agencies such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), DOT (Department of Transportation) or FDA (Federal Drug Administration). Failure to abide by these storage and transportation regulations can result in fines.

Medical gas cylinders should be stored in a cool, dry space, that is well-ventilated.  Make sure they are inspected before use, if you notice any damage to the cylinder contact the source of the cylinder.
